Meaning Beyond Religion

“Is there existential meaning beyond religion?”

Here is my NPR comment:

“No, the naturalistic worldview cannot offer what religion does. . .and we can be grateful for that. When Nature is enough, wonderful and super enough, there is no longer a need for a Super-Nature. The author might read John Muir or John Burroughs, Mary Oliver or Whitman or Thoreau or one of hundreds of humble humans who love the natural world enough to preserve it and share it. It isn’t about “waxing poetic,” though poetry can be a powerful expression of wonder. It you need “meaning” and “purpose” I suggest a life-partner, good companions or just be more open to the joy of living in this world. As Thoreau said, one world at a time.”
